Originally, our plan was to take it easy today. A leisurely stroll in Lienz and maybe a visit to the outdoor pool was the plan. Just before Lienz, however, we decided to change our minds and soon we were pedaling our way uphill on the Schlossbergrunde, past Schloss Bruck up to the Sternalm. While we could have taken the gondola and lift of the Lienzer Bergbahnen to reach our destination, with 800 meters of elevation gain in our calves, the subsequent downhill always feels much better and more earned. So we steadily climbed 400 vertical meters in an hour along the partly steep forest road. From time to time, motivated e-bikers overtook us, and a lone mountain biker besides us was also trying to escape the heat from the valley.
Just before reaching the Sternalm, Stefanie suggested visiting the Kleinen See, which turned out to be an excellent idea. Just a few extra meters in elevation rewarded us with refreshing coolness.
After a hearty lunch (dumplings and Sacher cake), we launched into the downhill. Although the well-prepared trails are not the natural alpine trails we love, the deliberately designed curves tempt us to smile as we glide steeply down into the valley.
Finally arriving at the bottom with the car's display showing 38°C, we quickly headed to our next campsite - Falkennest, everyone freshened up. After a short search, we found the perfect pitch and planned the coming days in Lienz with Greek salad.
