Here we go!

So. On my fifth day in Madrid, I am finally able to write the first entry in my blog. The first few days have been very turbulent and I had little time for anything other than university matters, apartment hunting, moving, and getting to know the other Erasmus students. The apartment that I had secured through an agency back in November did not match the description on the internet. For this reason - and because I honestly didn't feel comfortable there - I moved out after one night and temporarily stayed on a German classmate's sofa. From today onwards, I will be living in a solid Airbnb room until the end of January, which is, like the overall housing market in Madrid Centro, overpriced. The search for a new shared apartment will continue from now on. Four months in Airbnb would be too expensive after all. :-)

I like the university, it takes about 30-40 minutes by metro from the city center. As an Erasmus participant, as I've often heard, it's not easy to get to know the local students, so I'm happy that my classmate's roommate is a Spaniard and can teach me a few phrases. I've also met a very nice Spanish girl through the university's 'Buddy' program, which is designed to facilitate the start of the study abroad experience. For example, Carlota picked me up from the airport and helps me with any questions I have. That's also why the arrival went smoothly.

What exactly have I been doing in the last few days? As mentioned before, mainly apartment hunting. In addition, I have met other Erasmus students during various activities, and a small group of German girls has formed (funnily enough, three more of them come from my university in Germany). Since there are - as far as I've heard - hundreds of students now studying for a semester at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, I probably won't get to know them all. Anyway, we have explored the city a bit and I have a new favorite fast food place: 'Cerveceria 100 Montaditos'. They have small sandwiches that cost between 1 - 1.50 € each, and you order several of them (like Tapas). They also have nachos with guacamole and cheese for 2 € - unbeatable price.

Otherwise, Madrid is a city that overwhelms you in a certain way. Although I'm not a fan of big cities (to live in), this was more of a 'positive' overwhelming feeling. The city has many beautiful corners, and there's always something going on. I'm excited to see what the next few weeks will bring and of course, I hope for a nice and permanent place to stay.
