One thinks, one already had the worst bus ride of his life, but somehow it got even worse ...🙈
The journey from San Pedro de Atacama to Salta in Argentina was supposed to take about 11 hours, including crossing the border. But only supposedly...
It started with the bus being a bit late, but no big deal. Then it went steadily up the mountain and the bus chugged along at a leisurely pace of about 20 km/h. After 1 1/2 hours, the bus broke down. The engine was tinkered with for over an hour and then the drinking water collected by all the passengers was poured in somewhere. Surprisingly, the bus was able to continue. But unfortunately, only for about half an hour, and then it was finally over. We had to wait for about 5 hours for a replacement bus. Nobody had much to drink anymore and there was only some snacks to eat. In the replacement bus, we drove for another 2 hours to the border crossing to Argentina. The immigration process was relatively quick, but then came the bombshell. The replacement bus did not have permission to continue driving in Argentina. That meant we had to wait for the next bus at the border for another 5 hours. Fortunately, the very diligent bus driver provided us with sandwiches, tea, and soda. And when the woman behind me suddenly had to vomit loudly and violently, and the whole bus stunk, the drama was complete 🙈.
In the next bus, we drove for another 5 hours to Salta, luckily without any major incidents. A 22-hour bus odyssey.... How good that I have booked a flight for the next journey 🙃
