When I wake up at 8 o'clock after the freezing night, some of the speed campers have already moved on.
This morning I tried to explore the insider tip Jackson's Bay, but it was a disappointment.
On the way to Haast Pass, a few speed campers pass me again, but they usually miss the exit to the next lookout point or short walk to one of the many waterfalls 😂.
In the afternoon, strong wind and heavy rain set in. Therefore, I don't stay at one of the few freedom camping spots in the region, but I drive over Lake Hawea with great afternoon sun to Wanaka on a campsite outside. In the night, heavy continuous rain sets in, but it doesn't matter, I sleep like a log. The announced snowfalls have come during the night. Haast Pass up to 6 cm of snow and Milford Sound up to 30 cm.
I'm at least 2 days ahead of schedule now, but at least on the 'right' side of the Southern Alps. The decision was right, as I didn't like the glacier locations Franz Josef and Fox that much anyway.
