This morning I walked to the baker and, exceptionally, made breakfast myself again. Sylvia, the hostel owner, and a guest gave us some tips on what we can do on the island. Day tours around the island are also offered here, for 180 dollars per person. We decided against it, as we can see animals just fine on our own and have the freedom to manage our time. Besides, we would probably just end up feeding fish anyway, since it is an 8-hour boat tour. We hired a taxi for 4 hours and had it drop us off at 3 different locations.
First, we went to El Junco, the highest elevation (730m) of volcanic origin. Here is the only freshwater lake of the Galapagos Islands. It is not used for water supply. We circled the lake and enjoyed beautiful views time and again. The next stop was a turtle breeding station. There were giant tortoises all around the grounds. These animals look very prehistoric.
The third and final stop was a small hike to a beautiful sandy beach with swimming opportunities.
After that we needed to eat something and then went out exploring again. La Loberia was our destination. A sandy beach with an adjacent path through volcanic rock leading to a cliff. Here we found our beloved sea lions, lizards, birds, and the heads of sea turtles poking out of the water. Once again a sea lion approached me with great curiosity. But it still has a tendency to run away. 😅 Actually, we are in awe all day, as it is simply so unique here.
