Off to Holbox 🌴

From Cancun, we took a small shuttle and drove for about 2.5 hours to Chiquila.

Originally, we had planned to travel with one of the modern ADO buses, but unfortunately, the seats were already fully booked for the day - even though at least 2/3 of the seats were still available in the morning. So we quickly had to find an alternative! After a short search, we luckily came across a company that still had available seats for the day and started near our location. However, this also cost us an additional €40.

During the shuttle ride through more remote areas, we got to know the other side of the city. People live beyond the tourist areas in extremely poor conditions in self-built huts without proper doors and roofs, surrounded by garbage. On Holbox, garbage is also a big problem, as we later discovered on the island. There are only a few trash cans on the streets, so the waste piles up on the streets and especially in non-touristy corners.

Arriving in Chiquila, we continued our journey on the ferry. The crossing takes about 30 minutes and was included in the total price of €80 for 2 people for the trip to Holbox.

Holbox is a cute little island that is only 2 kilometers wide at its widest point and 42 kilometers long. There are no paved roads and no cars here. The only motorized means of transportation are the golf carts, otherwise people get around on foot or by bike.

The island impresses with many colorful pictures on house walls and its tranquility. After 2 days on the island, we are already deeply relaxed and live in the moment. In the mornings, we get some freshly baked sweet pastries for breakfast from a local woman who stands by the road with her small wooden cart. Then we head to the beach, where we enjoy our little breakfast with a view of the sea, and then we simply see what we feel like doing that day. We play cards and relax in the water in between. In the evenings, we try the local specialties. That's the way to live!
