After finally meeting up with Niko, we drive to the first scenic highlights on the Great Ocean Road. These are almost always rock formations that protrude from the water along the coast. Bay of Islands, The Grotto, and London Bridge are the first ones we visit during twilight. After that, we drive to Port Campbell to a campground. On the way there, we encounter a kangaroo. Witzi was able to swerve, so it only hopped into the side of our vehicle. Fortunately, nothing happened except for some damage to the paint. After the shock, we enjoy a few beers and also get to know Vici and Simon, with whom we chat half the night ;)
The next morning, we get up before sunrise to be at the 12 Apostles for sunrise. Really beautiful. After that, we continue to the Gibson Steps and the Shipwreck.
For lunch, we enjoy fish and chips and drive to Kennett River. According to Vici and Simon, there are lots of koalas there and also very friendly parrots. The tip was really worthwhile. We saw 4 koalas, some high up in the eucalyptus tree, some very far down. One of them put on a little climbing show and we thought he would fall down.
After that, we lured a few parrots with the seeds we had bought beforehand. They literally ate out of our hands and sat on them. As it slowly got dark, we headed towards Melbourne. The road was another highlight. It meandered along the coast. Just before Melbourne, our paths temporarily diverge because we stay overnight at a rest stop and Niko picks up a friend from the city and continues his journey the next day.
But we have decided to meet again somewhere on the east coast in swimwear and warmer temperatures.
