Prince Yaroslav the Wise is considered the founder of the city. According to legend, the prince defeated a powerful bear in the year 1010 and built a fortress on the spot. A bear standing on two legs adorns the city's coat of arms.

The old town with its many churches has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005 and was definitely worth a stop.

The oldest attraction in the city is the Christ Transfiguration Monastery surrounded by a kremlin.

Many wealthy traders lived in Jaroslawl who commissioned the construction of many churches. The Prophet Elijah Church was also commissioned by a wealthy merchant family who delivered sable and other furs to the Tsar's court.

After the October Revolution, the Dormition Cathedral was confiscated. The new communist rulers initially converted the magnificent building into a local employment office and then into a grain storage facility. In 1937, the landmark was simply blown up. The cathedral was rebuilt and inaugurated in 2010.
