Im Klassenzimmer drinnen und draussen

Publicado: 25.09.2019

Second day of school. I am assigned to level 2 out of 8. Better than level 1, so I am in the "beginner" group. There are 9 people in the class. The origins of the individuals are Brazil, Korea, Vietnam, Japan, and Switzerland. A very diverse group. This way, we are not easily tempted to speak a language other than English.

In the afternoon, I did my homework at school and then went to the library, as the teacher said it is a good way to learn a language. I went to the children's section so that I can understand what I'm reading, as pictures speak more than a thousand words. I brought a book from Switzerland, which is serving me well here too. Before my departure, I received a Bible that has everything written in German on one page and on the next page in English. This way, I can read verse by verse and compare it with English while learning the words. So this book won't gather dust here either.

Then we had a tour of Victoria Downtown. We were a group of 25 people, so not everyone understood everything. But we were able to practice our English by talking to each other, often using gestures.

Our guide was Chinese, so we first went to Chinatown.

Then on the way to the government building, we saw various taxis such as airplanes, ferries, etc.

The government building is very similar to ours in Bern.

You can go right up to the building and it also has copper domes. During the march in the city, I noticed a few things. Including this poster. When I saw it, I felt like having some cheese fondue the way we make it. But upon closer inspection, I realized it is not cheese fondue, but probably chocolate fondue.

That's probably better, because I doubt that Canadians can make a cheese fondue that I'll like. In one other aspect, Canadians are definitely better than us Swiss: products made with maple syrup. I love products with maple syrup. And I have seen 5 stores so far that practically only offer products made with maple syrup.

Two stores also offer 66 flavors of ice cream. I will probably have to buy out one of the stores before I leave, not with ice cream, but with biscuits. Because not only do I love these biscuits, syrup, etc., even the tea is not bad at all, my family loves it too. I wondered for a long time whether I should mention this part. Because if all the readers only want to taste products made with maple syrup, I probably don't have space in my suitcase. If anyone still wants to try it, they have to come to us. I don't ship anything, and knowing myself and my family, nothing will last long. I already have an appetite and will probably not wait until my departure to buy the first biscuits and eat them right away.
