Bankruptcy, Bad Luck, and Upgrade

Published: 07.07.2024

When you sit in the lecture hall in Bern on Friday morning and think, oh, everything feels so easy, in a few hours you will be on your way to the North and everything is ready so far... and then your phone buzzes over and over again... Peter is trying to call. Shortly after, a WhatsApp message 'the ferry from Denmark to Norway has been canceled'. What? Canceled? This can't be true. And now? On Sunday noon, the train to Trondheim and Bodø and the ferry to the Lofoten Islands are booked. Rent a car from Hamburg to Oslo? Nearly 2000 francs for 2 days, no, we'll cancel that. There are still ferries from Copenhagen and Kiel. They are of course three times as expensive, but in the end it works out with Kiel. 2 hours wasted, annoyed, cried, desperate. But maybe all this was good for something. In the night train to Hamburg, we had an upgrade to the sleeping car, yes, you read that right, not a downgrade. We each had two 'fun packages' with sleep mask, soaps, extra water, nuts, slippers, and much more. Peter, of course, tried everything at the same time, as shown in the photo. :)
Now we are lying on the deck of this incredibly gigantic ship and enjoying 20 hours of luxury doing nothing. We throw all worries and frustrations from yesterday into the Baltic Sea, and if there are any left, the wind will take them. At the moment, we enjoy the wind in our hair - well, at least in Anja's hair ;) - but we both know that it will be our constant companion in the weeks to come. Late in the evening, we see the sun spectacularly set with all colors - probably for the last time for a few weeks.
