The Pacific was roaring all night and it is still doing so this morning - thankfully. The first surfers are already on their way to the beach by seven. Well then, we'll get up too. It's overcast, but not raining. Breakfast is outside, locally brewed coffee with vanilla and roasted hazelnut flavor - very delicious. Anja finally has her beloved peanut butter, well, not exactly... at home she's been going on and on about how much she looks forward to SKIPPY peanut butter and how many kilos she plans to import. Unfortunately, Skippy is a US product and Canada is not the USA, which is also good. And it's good that they sell their own products. After several supermarket visits and a desperate search, she bought a 1-kilo can of another brand. And this morning the surprise - it's almost just as good (she wouldn't admit more). With blueberry bagels, jam, and yogurt. The day is going to be great thanks to KRAFT Teddybear peanut butter. The bikes and we are ready to conquer Tofino... barely 20 meters in, Anja's bike notices that it's not quite ready. The seat post goes down and stays there... oh no... back to the campsite. 2 hours, 3 YouTube videos, 1 less cable, and plenty of curse words (entirely Anja) later the post is back in place. Thank you a thousand times, Peter, for your patience and the repair. The day and the race are saved! Off to Tofino!! The town is characterized by many colorful little houses, galleries of the natives, surf shops, and cafes. The weather has gotten better this afternoon (Anja's bike must have done that so we would have sunshine). The Trans Canada Highway ends here. Continuing along the west coast can only be done by boat or seaplane. We let ourselves drift through the town, discovering a small restaurant that offers fresh Pacific halibut. Let's take that! Very delicious. We take a hike through the rainforest to Middle Beach. The paths wind through giant ferns and moss-covered giant trees. Like an enchanted fairy tale forest where hopefully the wolf doesn't think he has an appetite for Little Red Riding Hood right now. There was a warning from the National Parks Service about a wolf in the area. Back on the bikes, yay the seat post is still working, we stop at various small beaches littered with driftwood. It's wonderful here, but quite chilly and uncomfortable. At the last beach, we even spot the fountain first, a little later a small part of a whale's body further out in the sea. How amazing is that? The day starts with considerable frustration and ends with a whale sighting and a feeling of well-being and nice weather (the forecast was rain). Thanks, just like that....
