Week 68 - Restart, Setback, Daily Work Life

Published: 23.08.2026

The first work week is done.

This Monday, we started with our first tasks and got to know the team.

While Franzi will be working in housekeeping and the kitchen, Julian will handle guest tours and take care of minor repairs and maintenance.

In the first days, we tackled various preparation tasks together.

The first guests arrived on Thursday, and we realized that not only we as newcomers but everyone was quite excited until their arrival.

Unfortunately, Julian also had to cope with a setback, as he did not pass the bus driving test on his first attempt.

Unfortunately, the practice prior was a bit lacking, and there were Canadian rules that were not followed. Additionally, the examiner was incredibly unfriendly, which did not help either.

After digesting the failure a bit, the tasks like mowing hiking paths on the enormous property (with a new ride-on mower) and splitting wood (with a hydraulic splitter) at least brought some joy.

Franzi does housekeeping for 5 days and on 3 evenings, she assists in the kitchen with washing dishes and plating meals.

Alongside, we both have additional small tasks that will change again with the winter.

Besides work, we were also able to admire our first northern lights. As it is currently only dark for about 4 hours, we had to stay up late for this. It was definitely worth it, but we naturally hope for even more spectacular northern lights during our time here.

Since we live on the property, it’s not a problem for us to do multiple shifts a day, and we can usually set our own working hours.

In our small apartment, we have one room. Because the second room is unoccupied, we also use it a bit as a storage and workout room. We don’t have to share the kitchenette and the bathroom, so we have set everything up nicely and already feel quite comfortable.

We are still learning something new every day and gaining more confidence step by step. We are curious to see how everything will come together in the next weeks when even more guests arrive.

Julian's new test is unfortunately not until mid-September, so he cannot do tours until then. We both hope that the second test goes well because we really like it here and the team is great.

Until then, we hope to present ourselves well throughout and always perform our tasks excellently.

We feel very comfortable, and the team is super nice. Everyone supports each other to provide guests with a great experience.

The standard is definitely very high, which also puts some pressure on us since each task is new for us. Many of our colleagues have learned the trade, and for them, it comes quite easily.

Next week, we will delve a bit more into our tasks :-)
