Tuscany Tour 2026

Montalcino - Day 19

After a night in Montepulciano, we drove to the nearby town of Montalcino.

Montalcino - the home of Brunello in the midst of Val d'Orcia.

However, the weather god was not in our favor (and this was despite the fact that we had visited so many churches during our Tuscany vacation). He threw a significant wrench into our plans. Due to the stormy weather, we couldn't explore the town. It would have certainly been worth it, as on the way to the parking spot above the town, we were able to catch a glimpse.

We could see part of the Fortezza di Montalcino (or Castello di Montalcino) as we passed by. It is an imposing fortress with a pentagonal layout in the heart of Tuscany.

The fortress was built starting in 1361 by Sienese architects after the area came under the rule of Siena. It served in the 16th century as the last bastion of the Republic of Siena against Florence.

We also had a chance to glimpse the Chiesa Madonna del Soccorso.

The building was constructed in 1330 on the site of the medieval church Porta al Corniolo, where an ancient depiction of Mary had once been displayed for public veneration. Originally, it was a simple, open chapel to which the inhabitants of Montalcino brought many offerings, but this attracted numerous thieves. For this reason, the community of Montalcino decided in 1333 to build a fully enclosed church.

Unfortunately, it was not meant for us to examine the town closely, and so the next day we traveled to Massa Marittima.
