Next, we headed to Zeeland's capital, Middelburg. The city has over 1200 monuments. In the city center, there are several monumental buildings and many small alleyways. The surroundings are wonderfully green.

In the 17th century, Middelburg was the second most important city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam. There are still clear traces from this era to see. One can admire old warehouses and stately mansions.

The first 'Stedehuus' in the market of Middelburg was lost in a major fire in 1426. On the other side of the market, construction of a new town hall began in 1452. The facade was completed in 1458. The construction of this impressive building took until 1520. In World War II, the town hall was destroyed by a bombing. What you see today is a beautifully restored version.

The abbey in Middelburg was founded around 1100 by monks from Flanders. The monastery acquired immense wealth, and the abbot was one of the most powerful and influential figures in Zeeland. After the conquest of the city by the Prince of Orange in 1574, the monks were forced to leave the abbey.

On the side of the abbey complex, there is also the abbey house 'Lange Jan'. The tower is 90.5 meters tall, making it higher than the six tallest towers in the Netherlands.
