Malcesine

From Lazise, we traveled to Malcesine, as we wanted to see the colorful houses, blooming flowers, and a castle that had already inspired Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Malcesine is located at the northern end of Lake Garda and is a picturesque town with narrow streets right by the lake.

The cityscape is dominated by the Castello Scaligero on its rugged rock, around which the town has been built for centuries. The fortress of Malcesine can be dated back to the last centuries of the first millennium BC, although there are some documents suggesting that this castle was constructed at some point in the middle of the first millennium AD by the Lombards.

The single-nave Baroque church Santo Stefano from the 8th century and the Palazzo dei Capitani, a Scaliger palace from the 13th century that was later rebuilt in the Venetian Gothic style, are also worth seeing.

The Gothic Palazzo dei Capitani from the 15th century was the residence of the Venetian governors (Capitano). In the entrance hall, there is a beautiful ceiling fresco of the castle, which leads into a lovely garden by the lakeshore.

With the Funiva cable car, you can reach Monte Baldo and enjoy a splendid view over Lake Garda from the mountain.

From the bus stop located right in front of the campsite, you can easily and affordably travel to the town using the tourist bus.
