Lazise

What we also missed on our Lake Garda tour was a visit to Lazise. So we set off from Sirmione to head there.
Lazise is a picturesque town on the southeastern shore of Lake Garda.
This beautiful harbor town has a long and fascinating history. It was already inhabited during Roman times, but the rise of the town began in the Middle Ages. In 983, Emperor Otto II granted the town the right to self-govern – thus, Lazise became the first free town in Italy.
The imposing Scaliger Castle was built in the 14th century by the della Scala family and served to protect the town from hostile attacks and is now one of the most remarkable historical buildings on Lake Garda. However, it cannot be visited, as it is privately owned. But even from the outside, it is very impressive.
The old town is framed by a well-preserved old city wall with gates and towers.
The historic districts of Lazise, where one can continually discover old Venetian palaces, can be found around the elongated harbor basin.
Behind the harbor is the white-pink paved Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, which formerly served as a marketplace. A bustling promenade, Corso Ospedale, runs through the old town. For visiting the almost completely preserved city wall, the Via Rocca between the East and South Gate is recommended.
The churches of San Martino and San Nicolò are among the important sacred buildings of Lazise. The large, single-nave church of San Martino can be found towards the eastern city gate, and the simple Romanesque church of San Nicolò from the 12th century is located at the harbor.
