Whaling 🐳 🚣

Until the mid-1980s, whales were hunted in the Azores using the simplest means.

7 men per boat, equipped with wooden harpoons.

Two museums on Pico document this time. Around 200 sperm whales per year were caught on Pico alone.

Some of the bones and ivory (a tooth weighs up to a kilogram!) were processed into useful things - and kitsch.
