Even though the timing doesn't quite fit, here is a report on our experiences with the earthquake in Panama.
We were sitting at the dining table in our beautiful apartment in Playa Venao after breakfast when we suddenly felt a slight rumble.
Within seconds, the entire ground shook, and the house trembled. The noises that accompanied it were incredible. We panicked and quickly got outside, standing in shock in front of our building. At first, it's hard to understand what is actually happening.
Fortunately, one of the guests at the resort quickly took the initiative, called everyone together, and led them up a hill. A tsunami warning was issued shortly thereafter.
We waited there for 3 hours and then decided to go back to the apartment to see what could be salvaged. We only had what we were wearing and thankfully our papers and money.
Even though it wasn't exactly safe, we managed to get almost all our belongings out of the apartment and didn’t know what to do next.
Fortunately, we met a Colombian family who were, of course, in the same situation. We teamed up with them and set off in a convoy towards
Panama City.
Luckily, there was only one bridge along the way that had damage. The police were already there, but they let us through.
On the way, we secured an earthquake-safe hotel in Panama City from the car and arrived completely exhausted after a 6-hour drive at night.
In the lobby, there were people lying everywhere, obviously stranded because of the closed airport.
We were actually able to check in and were immensely relieved when we finally reached our room on the 31st floor. When there was an aftershock, and the whole high-rise shook, it didn't leave a good feeling, but we still felt relatively safe. As long as it shakes, everything is fine.
An incredibly scary experience, but fortunately, we are both uninjured.
