Beautiful Westfjordland

Published: 21.08.2022

It was worth stopping at a rest area above the Geirangerfjord. The morning was great - the fog slowly dissipated and the fjord came into view.

We had a leisurely breakfast and then continued up into the mountains to 1500 meters. Up there, there was an even better view of the Geirangerfjord.

From 1500 meters, we drove down a beautiful, long valley to Lom with its beautiful stave church, and then climbed back up to 1480 meters to the Sognefjell. And of course, after that, we had to go back down to the next fjord at sea level.

We were hungry and looking for something warm to eat at Sohnefjell, and surprisingly, the cabin host could still offer us a very good elk burger with potatoes and cauliflower. The vegetarian option was also very good. We skipped the wine for €11 per glass.

On the way down, the brakes of the motorhome got hot and in the end, we only drove with the first gear through the steep turns.

Besides the Trollstigen to Geiranger stretch, these 150 km are probably one of the most beautiful in Norway - a net driving time of 5 hours, but worth every second. The pictures speak for themselves. The reality is even more impressive.

Our destination for today is the Nigardsbreen, a branch of the Jostedal Glacier. This glacier is the largest in continental Europe and can be approached via a not very difficult path. We are looking forward to it - even if the weather is supposed to be rainy tomorrow.
