After many bumpy kilometers on the German A7, we arrived in Bamberg in the early afternoon.
We had read a lot about Bamberg, its rich history and the almost completely preserved medieval city center, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
So we were disappointed when we drove into the city from the east. Apart from the actually very beautiful city center, it is quite rundown and it took us a while for our expectations of the city to be fulfilled. But after a good meal and the very special (smoke) beers, we felt good again. The night watchman tour was finally the highlight.
The tour included many nice anecdotes about medieval as well as present-day Bamberg, and the night watchman actually knew Deutschlandsberg and especially St. Stefan ob Stainz, where his 90-year-old aunt ran the pharmacy for many years.
