Cycling to Pentedattilo

Published: 07.10.2024

Five kilometers up to the historical village of Pentedattilo, established around 1000 BC. The village was destroyed by an earthquake and rockfall many years ago and was rebuilt further down. Today marks our 23rd travel day.

We bike five kilometers uphill. At the top, there’s a parking lot, and from there, we continue on foot for about 500 meters to the village. We were greeted right away by an artist who informed us that the house in front of his was 500 years old. You can still see the remnants of the rock collapse today. Currently, three locals and four artists live in this nearly extinct village. After the earthquake, the village was rebuilt further down, while the church and cemetery remained intact. Strolling through this village is definitely a must for every Calabria visitor.

In the church, we thank Mother Mary with a Marian song and light candles for our protection. We also pray for peace around the world. The chimes that ring every half hour are dedicated to Mary.

We wander through the well-preserved village for another one or two hours, which also offers a holiday apartment, and we enjoy the buildings from long before our era. Recently, many artists have gained access to the village and offer their goods to tourists. After a long stay and a cup of cappuccino, we set off home on our bikes, now going downhill only. In Melito, some refuel with coffee, ice cream sundays, and salad. We hurry back because we want to go to the sea. Briefing and then a glance at the volcano, which is shining again in the evening light.
