2026 - August - Marseille

This meant we could focus on the B-Highlights this time, which are sights that aren't usually in the spotlight. 

A short trip on the T2 tram took us to our first stop: the Palais Longchamp. Although this attraction sounds like a castle, it is not one! 

In fact, this masterpiece was built by architect Henri-Jacques Espérandieu to celebrate Marseille’s successful connection to the Durance River. Water was redirected here via an 85 km long canal, as there had previously been significant water scarcity in the area. By the way, Henri-Jacques Espérandieu also built the famous Basilica Notre-Dame de la Garde. 

The central figure on the monument at the water castle is a strong female figure representing the Durance River. Below her are four bulls that embody the strength of the region. 

The many stairs leading upwards are now also used by many athletes who run various rounds up and down the stairs. 

Behind the Palais, there used to be a small zoo; now it’s just a small, somewhat overgrown park area. 

After a coffee at the bistro, we simply walked back down into the city center towards the harbor, passing the Église des Réformés with Jeanne d’Arc as the central figure at the entrance. And then right in the middle of the city, we were surprised by two blue giraffes on the Boulevard La Canebière. By now, I know that they stood behind the Palais Longchamp in 2013 as part of the 'Funny Zoo' project when Marseille was the European Capital of Culture. By the way, the small giraffe has a little bookshelf incorporated. 

Further down, you automatically arrive at the harbor and to my favorite building in Marseille: the MuCEM Museum. 

So, we had a lazy day, but wandering through the city in a relaxed manner definitely has its charm. 

And here’s a final note to myself: There is still an undiscovered place in Marseille, the Palais du Pharo.
