#7 Luther City - Here I stand, I can't do otherwise.

Published: 31.10.2021

October 25, 2021: Worms

J. When we woke up at our parking space by the Rhine, it was so foggy that we could only see a few meters ahead. We could only hear the ships passing by on the Rhine for a long time, and only when they were right in front of us, we could faintly see them as large gray shadows in the fog. Therefore, we decided to drive to Worms and have breakfast there by the Rhine, in the best sunshine and good visibility. After that, we walked through Worms. I had been here once eight years ago and could only remember the cathedral. The cathedral was impressive. What I found particularly interesting was that all the statues inside were introduced with a short autobiographical text, so we learned a lot about some saints and other biblical figures. In the city, we encountered references to Luther in many places, who had to appear before the Diet of Worms here and therefore closely connects this place with the Reformation. (This is also where the Luther quote "Here I stand, I can't do otherwise" comes from.) However, there are of course also Catholic churches here and even a Dominican monastery, where Florian's former religious teacher is. Unfortunately, we did not meet him or any other monks.
