December 5, 2021: Figueres
J. Figueres is known for its Dalí Museum. We first explored only the city, but even in the city there are some rather peculiar sculptures by Dalí on display. The most impressive building in the city is the Dalí Museum, which has a red facade with yellow swirls on one side and regular giant egg-shaped sculptures on the roof. On the other side, there are delicate golden sculptures on the roof and there is a huge glass dome.
Because it was quite windy and a bit cold, we decided to go to the museum. But the 14€ entrance fee was worth it. It was impressive. I have never been so impressed by an art museum before. Dalí himself built, designed, furnished and even created some artworks specifically for the museum in the 1970s. There were huge artworks in large halls or in the courtyard, but Dalí used the entire space, even hanging sculptures on the ceilings in the corridors. Dalí must have been an incredibly funny man. In many of his artworks, I could find something caricature-like, sarcastic or critical, but all with a lot of humor. The famous painting by Dalí, with the melting clocks, may show how little he adheres to the laws of physics in his artworks, but compared to his other works it is really boring. I don't know exactly why that painting became so famous. The rest of the artworks and the museum are indescribable and hard to put into words. Due to the huge dimensions and the lighting, it was also impossible to capture this impressive museum in photos. Here is a small attempt, but I think you just have to go there yourself to experience it.
