After about 5 hours of driving we arrived in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand. Wellington, with its around 210,000 inhabitants, is located at the southern end of the North Island directly on the Cook Strait, which separates the North and South Islands.
It's windy here, but that's what Wellington is known for. The city itself? It's ok, not an absolute highlight with its urban canyons, which could easily be located in any other modern city.
The day - as announced - began with sunrise in Napier. That was definitely a highlight: at 6:30 a.m. we were on the beach and enjoyed the spectacle - pretty much alone.
The drive to Wellington led through the hinterland, sometimes barren, sometimes undulating or mountainous, sometimes absolutely flat...but great impressions: for example the small Matamau Diner north of Dunevirke, which every New Zealand trucker must have visited at least once - at least a thousand pictures Judging by their trucks on the diner walls. Or Shannon, a small, sleepy nest 100 km north of Wellington, a plane wreck as a landmark - absolutely awesome.
Tomorrow we'll have Wellington on our hands again, so the city has a whole day to rehabilitate itself from its first impression before we take the ferry across the Cook Strait to Picton on the South Island at night (2 a.m.).
Ferry, Cook Strait? More about that another time.
