We had booked a spot at a small campsite in Fehmarn for the Pentecost weekend.

Unfortunately, the weather forecast was rainy and stormy, but on Friday evening, the Sun Island welcomed us with blue skies during our stroll through the nature reserve “Grüner Brink”.

Over time, lakes separated from the sea have formed here, serving as a habitat for many species of birds.

We actually wanted to walk around the lakes, but at the beach we found out that the path right by the water is closed from spring to autumn to protect the birds.

So we continued along the path on the dike further inland and back.

Along the way, we passed the memorial for the sinking of the Niobe.

It commemorates the sinking of the training ship of the same name, which sank off the coast of Fehmarn in 1932.

The next morning, we had a hearty breakfast with brunch at the campsite restaurant and chatted with some other campers from Hamburg who were also spending the Pentecost weekend in Fehmarn.
With full stomachs, we then drove to the Sea Center Fehmarn.

The large aquarium has existed since 1994 but moved and expanded in between.

In addition to numerous smaller fish, there were also rays and sharks in large tanks - a total of 4,000,000 liters of seawater.

What stood out to us was that we did not encounter any staff during our entire visit: We bought the tickets at the machine, the café was closed, and otherwise, no one was to be seen.

Afterwards, we drove to the town center of Burg and first visited the Nikolaikirche.

We wandered through the town center to the marketplace with its beautiful town hall.

After a shopping spree and a stop at the café, we went further to our last stop: Burgtiefe South Beach.

Here, you can see the last remnants of the castle Glambek, built in 1210 by King Waldemar II of Denmark, but only a few wall remnants have been preserved.

At South Beach, the “Foil Festival” was taking place, the largest board sports event in the world.

After watching the water sports participants for a while and admiring the boards in and in front of the exhibition tents, we continued strolling along the promenade.

The weather alternated between rain and sunshine, but we were equipped with umbrellas.

After climbing the observation tower and visiting the “Fehmarn Photo Point,” we drove back to the campsite.
