Freiburg im Breisgau

Published: 13.07.2026

On our way to France, we made a stop in Freiburg and also planned to spend the night there in our camper van.

On the first afternoon, we explored the charming old town with an “Actionbound” tour.

Old Town

This was almost completely destroyed in 1944 but was later rebuilt.

We walked through Gerberau, where a stone crocodile resides in the canal.

There are small “Bächle” (streams) throughout Freiburg in the streets: these small water channels were used for firefighting during the Middle Ages and as firebreaks; today, children float little boats in them or they serve to cool hot feet during warm temperatures.

At the Town Hall, we cooled off with a delicious ice cream sundae before continuing our exploration.

We also passed by the Münsterplatz and took a quick look at the famous church, which we wanted to return to the next day to examine the current art exhibition more closely.

To conclude, we dared to climb to the viewing terrace on the Schlossberg.

You can overlook the city, but almost nothing remains of the former castle.

The next day, we continued our city tour, passing by the Dreisam and the university.

Afterward, we explored the “Bächle” through an Adventure Lab (app scavenger hunt) to various special spots along the small canals.

At noon, we went back to the Münster to see the installation “visible invisible” by Elke Maier, which had been recommended to us before the trip.

The artist stretched hundreds of threads from the gallery and the vault to the high altar in six weeks.

Depending on the incidence of light, the threads become visible and appear like rays of light shining through the church building.

In the choir ambulatory, we also looked at the many small private chapels.
