As the southernmost stop of our journey, we chose Saarburg.

The town on the Saar has about 7500 inhabitants and a motorhome parking space by the riverside, from where you can reach the city center in 20 minutes.

We explored the old town on a city tour using the “Lauschtour” app, which guides you to various stations where you can listen to a short audio contribution about the sights and history.

Our route began in “Little Venice,” the Butter Market, where several bridges cross the Leuk, and a waterfall drops 18 meters into the depths.

Here you can also find four old mill houses, which are no longer in operation today.

A small mill museum we visited along the way tells the story of the mills.

We continued through the alley “Staden” until we reached the bell foundry Mabilon, which was still operating until 2002 and is now a museum.

On some of the houses we passed, metal rings were installed above the windows on the ground floor. During a flood of the Saar, which used to regularly flood the town, planks were hung here to allow passage from house to house. Meanwhile, the town is better protected against flooding, so regular flooding of the streets is a thing of the past.

Then it became strenuous again: We climbed up from the lower town to the ruins of the old Saarburg, which has been mentioned since the 10th century.

Unfortunately, the castle courtyard was mostly a construction site at the time, but we could still climb the tower inside the castle complex and look over the town and the Saar.

Unfortunately, the weather was a bit gray and drizzly today, so the visibility was not quite ideal.

We returned to the city center of the old town and finished our visit in Saarburg with coffee and cake at the Butter Market.
