22a Walk through Ulm

Route: 0 kilometers, cumulative: 1,832 kilometers | Elevation gain: 0, cumulative elevation gain: 7,129 meters, distance from home: 198 kilometers (as the crow flies)

I realize that historical buildings also need to be restored from time to time. This certainly includes the Minster. It is currently mostly covered in scaffolding – not only on the outside but also on the inside.

So, I head to the monastery in Wiblingen. It is highly praised and a visit is highly recommended. I start my walk along the Danube. A large construction site blocks my path, and I have to cross the Danube via a temporary bridge. From here, it's still over 3 kilometers to the monastery. My thirst increases, and I haven't brought anything to drink. Nearby is a swimming pool with a restaurant. After a hot chocolate and a croissant, I feel better, but I still give up on my plan. It’s too far and too warm. But then I see a bus going to Wiblingen, so I make it to my destination after all.

But what do I find? Another large construction site. A sign indicates that the crypt is open. It is, but you have to squeeze through the construction site. It’s not a pretty sight, and I leave as quickly as possible. I can’t visit the library either since I’m an hour too early for that. So, I turn around and take the bus back to the city center. I end up sitting next to a man who tells me some interesting facts about the area. I learn that Ulm belongs to Baden-Württemberg and Neu-Ulm to Bavaria. The border is formed by the Iller and later by the Danube. Napoleon is said to be responsible for this.

The Minster is open, so I go inside. But here too, almost everything is a construction site. I wonder how church services are held?

There is also the option of climbing the Minster tower to enjoy the view of the city and the surrounding area. Remembering the Walhalla, I dismiss the thought before it even fully forms. The tower can only be climbed via stairs. Even more than at the Walhalla! A total of 768 steps, or about 48 floors, which is 18 more than at the Walhalla.

So I decide it’s better to buy new shoes. Nearby, I find a specialty shop where I feel well-advised. I bought my last pair of shoes two years ago in Lisbon. I was very satisfied with them, but it was time for a change.

I have already covered quite a few kilometers in Ulm yesterday and today and taken many photos. So, it was time for a siesta, which I preferred to spend in my room.

Meanwhile, I’m sitting in a historic beer garden that has been spared from construction sites, drinking a 'Russ' (wheat beer with lemonade), to peacefully update my blog.

The route for tomorrow is already set, even though I haven't booked any accommodation. This time of year is ideal! There aren’t many cyclists on the road yet, and I’ve only experienced once how difficult it can be to find a room that fits my budget.

Entiendo que los edificios históricos también deben ser restaurados de vez en cuando. Sin duda, esto incluye la catedral (Münster). Actualmente, la mayor parte está rodeada de andamios, y no solo por fuera, sino también por dentro.

Así que me dirijo al monasterio de Wiblingen. Es muy elogiado y se recomienda mucho su visita. Me pongo en marcha a pie por la orilla del Danubio. Una gran obra me impide el paso y tengo que cruzar el Danubio por un puente provisional. Desde aquí todavía faltan más de 3 kilómetros para llegar al monasterio. La sed aumenta y no he traído nada para beber. Cerca hay una piscina con restaurante. Después de un chocolate caliente y un cruasán me siento mejor, pero aun así abandono mi plan. Está demasiado lejos y hace demasiado calor. Pero entonces veo un autobús que va a Wiblingen y así logro llegar a mi destino.

Sin embargo, ¿qué me encuentro allí? Una gran obra. Un cartel indica que la cripta está abierta. Lo está, pero hay que pasar a duras penas por medio de la construcción. No es una vista agradable y salgo lo más rápido posible. Tampoco puedo visitar la biblioteca porque he llegado una hora antes de tiempo. Así que doy media vuelta y vuelvo a tomar el autobús hacia el centro. Me siento al lado de un hombre que me cuenta algunos datos interesantes sobre la zona. Así me entero de que Ulm pertenece a Baden-Württemberg y Neu-Ulm a Baviera. La frontera la forma el río Iller y más adelante el Danubio. Se dice que Napoleón es el culpable de esto.

La catedral está abierta y entro. Pero también aquí dentro casi todo está en obras. Me pregunto cómo celebrarán los servicios religiosos.

Existe la posibilidad de subir a la torre de la catedral para disfrutar de las vistas de la ciudad y los alrededores. Al recordar el Walhalla, descarto la idea antes de que se concrete. A la torre solo se puede subir por escaleras. ¡Incluso muchas más que en el Walhalla! Un total de 768 escalones o, calculado en pisos, unos 48, es decir, 18 más que en el Walhalla.

Así que decido que es mejor comprar zapatos nuevos. Muy cerca encuentro una tienda especializada donde me asesoran muy bien. Los últimos zapatos los compré hace dos años en Lisboa. Estaba muy contento con ellos, pero ya era hora de cambiarlos.

Ayer y hoy ya he recorrido unos cuantos kilómetros por Ulm y he hecho muchas fotos. Por eso, llegó el momento de una siesta, que preferí pasar en mi habitación.

Mientras tanto, estoy sentado en una cervecería histórica que se ha librado de las obras, bebiendo un 'Russ' (cerveza de trigo con limonada), para actualizar mi blog con tranquilidad.

La ruta para mañana ya está decidida, aunque no he reservado alojamiento. ¡Esta época del año es ideal! Todavía no hay muchos ciclistas en ruta y solo una vez me ha pasado que fuera difícil encontrar una habitación que se ajustara a mi presupuesto.
