Day 6 From Visperterminen to Gondo

Published: 22.07.2022

Unlike yesterday, it is already hot in the morning today, and my hope to ride up the west side in the shade at the beginning fails due to the too flat slope or the sun already being too high.

However, the view of Weissorn and Bishorn is truly breathtaking.

Soon we reach Giw, the mountain station of a chairlift, where there is a flower box attached to each chair.

We wait unusually long, and eventually we are informed that a cyclist unfortunately had to turn back, which I did not expect. Maybe he didn't eat enough. My strategy for the past few days has been to eat something small and dissolve it with plenty of water at every break.

Now we go rather steeply again on inclined farm roads until we reach Gibidumpass (2100m), where there is a nice hut that the hiking trail passes by from afar. My joy does not last long as a sweaty man in an undershirt comes up to me and loudly says something twice that I do not understand. I kindly point to our guide, who translates for us that there is supposed to be a ban on driving here.

Because we are nice, we push the bike until the next corner.

Now a high valley below Fletschhorn (3990m) is crossed on a great high-altitude trail, which often has carry sections in the second half or the bike has to be pushed uphill. This takes a considerable amount of time and energy.

So these 10 km without much elevation gain cost us almost 3 and a half hours of riding, carrying, and pushing time (including lunch break).

From Bistimepass (2400m) the diverse trail-like hiking trail leads us nicely to Simplon.

There, the grand finale begins. We ride the so-called Stockalperweg through the Gondo Gorge to Gondo.

This section is great to ride: smooth sections, an airy staircase, an old defensive structure, a steep and blocky section, and a detour usually bring joy. Major riding mistakes are also not favorable here (especially in the gorge).

In the end, we were on the road for over 9 hours today, and everyone is already exhausted after 6 days.

This was a great tour that was well organized and, above all, had a great group cohesion, where everyone immediately helped each other.

Well, I would love to continue in two days, but this tour ends here. See you soon!
