24_ROTORUA AND MAORI CULTURE

In Rotorua, a permanent scent of sulfur hangs in the air, giving 'getting some fresh air' a slightly different meaning! Volcanic phenomena are all over the city, we go to the lake and think little of it, sneak through the hedge, and want to feel if it's warm… Only then do we see steam rising from a hole next to us and discover the warning signs; phew, that was close.

The entire lake is fenced off, and boiling thermal water bubbles in the earth holes everywhere, mud pits gurgle noisily, it's really surreal! We walk a lot until we're almost late for the Maori performance in an authentic Maori village (Whakarewarewa), but we make it just in time, and it's wonderful, very impressive, goosebumps!

In the evening, we grabbed a beer at

Pig&Whistle and saw some other nice spots in Rotorua, a lovely trip!
