A Weekend in Ackworth, Wakefield, and Pontefract

At the beginning of the year, I decided to use my travel time through the UK to visit my cousin at her boarding school. So I spent a weekend in the north of England. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Ackworth.

Thea spent a year there and had always told me about her boarding school. I wanted to see the school in person before her year ended.

The school looks very much like a typical English boarding school building. Or at least how one imagines it. I immediately thought of the English film classic 'Wild Child'.

Besides the school, we also took a little look around the village, which isn't very big, and then made use of the day to go to Pontefract, a small town nearby.

Typical English small town. Actually not much going on, but we were lucky. We arrived right in the middle of a town festival. We looked at the stalls, rummaged through a few charity shops, and actually found something, and otherwise just enjoyed our time together.

Then we made our way back. Thea to the boarding school and I to my cozy accommodation in Normanton. The next day, we met in Wakefield. Wakefield is a city in the north of England and is only about 9 miles from Ackworth. First, we walked around the old town and checked out the city's cathedral.

We wrapped up our weekend together with a delicious pizza and one last moment together.

After many good conversations, it was already time to say goodbye. My journey started with a meeting with Thea in Cambridge and now, at almost the end of my trip, we met again in her home for a year. Even though the small towns in northern England are not exactly on my top favorite list, I really enjoyed my time with Thea! So thank you, Thea, for the wonderful weekend!
