Over Easter, I spent a week on vacation with my family in Germany. On Easter Monday, we wanted to return to London. It was the first time with a connection on the Eurostar. It turned out that traveling by train across Europe on Easter Monday was not a good idea. We left early in the morning at 10 o'clock with plenty of buffer time and several options to catch a Eurostar. Everything went very well until Cologne. It was a trip without changing trains and no delay. Unfortunately, the ICE to Brussels couldn't start due to overcrowding. We then started with a one-hour delay. In Aachen, the train had a technical defect. It was clear that I wouldn't be able to catch my original Eurostar anymore. We continued with a small train through Germany and Belgium. When the connecting train in Belgium was also canceled, it was final. I had to spend a night in Brussels.
Upon arrival in Brussels, I took care of getting a new Eurostar ticket and a hotel. Then we could finally enjoy the somewhat eventful day and explore Brussels in the evening/night.
For dinner, we had typical Belgian fries. But the famous thing about the fries is actually the sauces. Unfortunately, I can't name them anymore, but they were really very, very tasty.
Our hotel was located at Brussels Midi Station. From there, we moved to the old town of Brussels. Through beautiful streets, with many old terraced houses. After a little walk, we ended up by chance at the Grand-Place.
The Grand-Place is the town hall square and was simply overwhelming. Brussels' central square has been part of UNESCO World Heritage since 1998. It is one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. The Gothic town hall and the baroque facade of the surrounding terraced houses enclose the square. Each house, decorated and illuminated with gold, has a completely different effect, especially at night. I found the contrast of the houses to the very dark sky incredible.
What I also noticed is the street art. There is really something to discover on every corner. You can also find the odd statue:
After a very nice evening, we set off early the next morning. On to London.
After a 25-hour journey, I arrived in London City. Since I arrived a day later, I had to go directly from the train station to the kindergarten. After another hour, I finally arrived at work, feeling a bit tired. Everything went well on Tuesday morning and the journey was smooth.
The evening in Brussels was a very unexpected trip, but it was worth it in the end. I was glad to be able to get to know the city a little bit.
