The Menkemaborg in Uitzhuisen is a fully furnished house with authentic interior, featuring stylish gardens, canals, and a pathway around the estate. Here, one gets an impression of life in a Groninger castle in the 18th century. There are imposing fireplace surrounds with wooden carvings, a magnificently set table, and a cozy kitchen to admire. And of course, the four-poster bed from the early 18th century. It is clad in Chinese silk damask and has largely remained in its original condition, complete with the original slatted frame and mattresses.
The castle has been open to visitors since 1927, and since 1969, a foundation has taken care of its upkeep. Particularly noteworthy: Everything is arranged and presented with great attention to detail. Just the gardens surrounding the castle are worth a visit. We enjoy not only the castle and garden, but also a Sunday stay at the cozy garden restaurant in warm sunshine, with a glass of rosé and a slice of delicious tarte flambée.
