Rio Tinto – The Castle of the Guards

Published: 14.09.2023

While researching on the Spanish tourism website, I became aware of the natural spectacle Rio Tinto. It's roughly in our direction, let's go to Minas de Riotinto. The city provides free parking spaces, and when we got there we were the only ones.

We first drove on towards the next viewpoint; Two turns later we drove through a huge, impressive face. Unfortunately there was no way to stop, so we continued along the road, right through two shimmering turquoise lakes. At some point there was a picnic area where we could finally turn around; The viewpoint could also be reached from this direction. Unimaginable dimensions, the expression, the trucks and also the bang with the pressure wave during an explosion.

The search for the red river continued and we soon reached the visitor site at the source of the Rio Tinto. The colors are special, but they didn't seem particularly healthy to us. (The evening research confirmed our suspicions, the river looks spectacular in terms of color, but it is one of the most polluted rivers in the world. Why the Spanish tourism website sells this as a natural highlight remains a mystery to me.)

We continued our drive through the Andalusian hinterland and parked in El Castillo de las Guardas for the night. Although the community's three parking spaces were already occupied, we found another option. During dinner a horse came for a walk, later two cows and then the owner of the animals, who brought them their dinner.
