Just under 20km as the crow flies from Skiathos is the almost twice as large island of Skopelos, which - like Skiathos - served as the backdrop for the musical comedy 'Mamma mia' in 2008. Unlike other popular filming locations, the two islands were fortunately not overwhelmed by film tourists and so Skopelos leads a rather quiet existence compared to Skiathos.
This is certainly also due to the fact that there is no airport and only the ferry can take you there and back. An optimal connection (10:30 am there and 6:15 pm back) allowed us to take a beautiful day trip. Now in October, Skopelos town is even sleepier than the main town of the neighboring island. Nevertheless, we were able to secure the last available rental car for the day and set off on a journey of discovery.
The island is wild, beautiful, and sparsely populated. Now in October, you hardly come across a car on the roads. And the tourist magnets: the famous Mamma Mia beach (Kastani Beach) as well as the breathtaking cliff chapel Agios Ioannis, we practically had them all to ourselves. The town of Skopelos offers sleepy little streets with lovingly restored houses and spectacular views of the bay. The ferry ride then offers a beautiful view of the rugged coastline. And on the return trip to Skiathos with the sunset, we were even delighted by a few dolphins, illuminated by the moon, performing their jumps in the silvery shimmering sea.
