TBT - Throwback Thursday A week late, but one of the best anecdotes so far!
We set off at 7:30 a.m. We look for a bar for breakfast, but we only find a crowded one, where a group of 30 Portuguese people have just gone in, so we decide to just walk a little further. My foot is hurting a lot again today. Let's see if I can manage the day's stage. There are more beautiful street art pictures to admire in the town. Shortly before leaving the town, there was a sign on a wall that you had walked towards: go 15 steps further and just turn around. In the sequence of pictures you can see the really unique pictures that show the view after 15 steps. Unbelievable. At the edge of the town itself we find a hotel where we can at least get a coffee. As we then walk on, Viki joins us. Shortly afterwards we meet Susanne from
New Zealand again. A little further out there were more impressive street art creations to admire before we continued along the fields. In the next town we saw a church a little off the path that seemed to be built into a mountain. While we were looking for the way to the church, we met Johnny from Germany, who showed us the way to the church. Johnny hasn't left yet because he also has a lot of pain in his foot and can't walk very far. We leave our backpacks with him and walk up the hill to the church, which luckily for us was closed. So we carried on without having had a proper breakfast. In the next town, there is a sign for a bar that says it's open. We walk over and it's actually open. I open the door and Stefan from Germany, who I had dinner with 2 days ago, is sitting there alone. He looks a bit dejected. I call the others in and we sit down with Stefan and have breakfast.
An impressive story about this will follow later!
After we finally had breakfast, we continued on. At a very slow pace because of Johnny and me. We passed a small village on our way along the huge rapeseed fields. By now my pain was really bad again, so I decided to look for a bed in the next village. Once we got there, we all stayed in the hostel except for Ryan (he had booked a hotel in Burgos and therefore had to get there tomorrow). A very short day with only 18km in total was good for everyone. We took a photo together and then Ryan continued on his way. So we had the rest of the afternoon free for a few games in the fireplace room. One of the games was that everyone wrote a question on a piece of paper, then they went to the middle and in each round someone drew a piece of paper, read out the question and everyone answered it one after the other.
Best part of the day:
When asked what the best experience on the Camino was so far, Stefan answered as follows:
"For me it was today. I was sitting in the bar. I asked myself why I was doing all this. I felt really lonely and had decided to stop. To walk today and then fly home. I looked for buses and flights and at that moment you came into this bar. Without asking, you sat down next to me. You integrated me. You took me with you on the rest of the way. As if we had been walking together forever and all I knew was Luis. From one day to the next. For me that was a sign. So I decided to walk the Camino to the end and have now spent the last two hours planning all my remaining stages to Santiago."
I don't think there's anything that needs to be added to that. Moments that you have to experience to believe them. So moving. Here fate intervened and Stefan experienced what was probably the most significant moment on his Camino.
