South Africa Bimmel Bammel Tour 2024
Day 4
Good morning, Africa! Kai and I must have experienced the wildest adventures in our dreams last night – and no, it's not what you're thinking!
Today marks an event we've been looking forward to for six months: the big Cobra Day! Today's mission? Tame the Cobra... drive to the doctor.
Breakfast? No time! By 9:00 AM we need to be in the heart of Cape Town, where the beasts are waiting for us. But Martina, our morning hero, conjures up a wonderful breakfast for us, even though she still looks a bit sleepy – hats off to you, Martina!
Excited, Kristina, Kai, and I take off. Steffi has changed her mind and prefers to sleep a little longer – no worries, we’ll pick her up later!
We quickly find the address on Solan Street, the hotspot for the Cobra Experience. From below, we can already see the beauty waiting for us – or at least we thought so. Surprise! Instead of the long-awaited Cobras, we are greeted with the news that we’ve only purchased a voucher and are not booked for certain. What? That can't be right!
But now enters Joseph, the master of African improvisation. He promises to get two Cobras ready in record time – the white one just needs new tires, and the ignition on the black one needs quick adjustment. Originally scheduled for tomorrow, but hey, we’re in adventure land!
After 45 minutes filled with paperwork and a bit of magic, it's finally time: the Cobras are ready! My goodness, when we start the V8 engine for the first time, it feels surreal – the beasts hiss at us, making us feel like real race car drivers. Respect is definitely due here, because when you hit the gas, the rear could overtake us faster than we can blink.
Quickly refuel – Joseph couldn't make it in time, but hey, we’re just happy that it worked out at all!
With a lot of skill, we wind our way through the streets of Cape Town. It’s not that much fun, but we can hardly wait to leave the city behind and enjoy the coastal road. Now we just need to pick up Steffi, who is already waiting for us impatiently.
Off we go to Chapman’s Peak! The grins on our faces keep getting wider. With every curve, we merge more with our Cobras, and the adrenaline rush gets bigger. We take the bends boldly and press the gas hard on the straightaways.
Behind Muizenberg, we turn around and head back to Hout Bay. There we stop at Dunes to wash the dust of the drive out of our throats.
We chatter like hens and are still quite impressed by the ride!
Afterwards, it's back to the guesthouse because Klaus must see our speedy sleds – he can't miss that!
Time is pressing; our rental period is coming to an end. We arrive at the rental station right on time, and the return goes quickly. Joseph says we drove well and never reached the red zone. Yes, that's true, but how does he know that?
With a mischievous grin, he shows us a hidden camera that filmed the tachometer… Unbelievable!
To wind down the afternoon, we grab a bottle of Buitenverwachting Rosé and look for a nice spot on the beach. We mentally relive the entire Cobra Experience once more – what a day!
For dinner, we go to Bilbao Camps Bay. Today, we aren’t that hungry and stick to a few small snacks.
We’re back at the guesthouse early. The fireplace crackles, and we enjoy the cozy atmosphere. Soon the family from the Lower Rhine, along with Martina and Klaus, joins us.
What a sociable evening! Everyone brings their favorite bottle of African wine, and an in-house wine tasting ensues, filled with laughter and stories.
Slightly merry, we later fall into bed and dream of this fantastic day in Africa.
Good night, Africa!
