Day 7 (Di): Goal 1: La Chaquira near San Augustin

The archaeological/tourist site of La Chaquira is located about three kilometers outside of San Agustín - high above the deep-cut gorge of the Río Magdalena (Colombia's longest river). Initially, we tried to reach it by car. But after about 1 km, the already very steep access turned into a muddy path and because of the steepness the wheels spun, we returned to the main road and parked the car there. I then set off alone, as my friend said, “You go ahead alone, I’ll watch the car.” 😂

(Upon my return, I understood why: about 5 km, 200 meters elevation, tropics! - and there was a pub at the car😂😂).

So I went down the first half of the mountain for the second time. However, the muddy path turned out to be just a brief interlude. Afterwards, it would have been possible to go with the car - as proven by local tourists😅).

The final part ends with a steep descent. The return journey was somewhat strenuous due to the heat.

However, upon arrival, one is rewarded with a truly spectacular view of the deep green valley and the mighty riverbanks.

The rocks of La Chaquira are covered with ancient reliefs carved into the stone by pre-Columbian (yes, pre-Columbian, not Colombian😬) people. The main figure “Chaquira” is the most impressive and looks down with raised hands. Most of these reliefs have been significantly weathered by wind and rain. This blend of nature and history is indeed fascinating!
