Milford Sound

Hello everyone!

Today, we had only one thing on the agenda: Milford Sound, which is actually a fjord.

Since we would be spending a lot of time in the car and driving can be tiring, we decided on a combination of a bus tour and a boat trip. The earliest bus from realNZ left Te Anau at 7:45, so we grabbed some fresh pies beforehand and headed to the bus.

Bus driver Simon has quite a strong accent, so not every word was immediately comprehensible. However, New Zealand tour guides seem to have a penchant for corny jokes.

On both the way there and back, there were three photo stops each, along with of course the story of the road and tunnel construction to Milford Sound.

What’s remarkable on the journey and in the fjord is how steep the mountains are. Then there’s the rainforest. On the highest visible mountain, you can capture a combination that probably exists only one more time (I have to trust the guide here): fjord, rainforest, glacier.

We were lucky that it had rained the day before for the first time in a long while. This made some temporary waterfalls active again.

Best spot on the boat: front, outside, or left side.

Bus tour yes/no? Both are possible, but parking on site is limited, the driver can see little or ends up (like a Juicy mobile) in the abyss.
