Hello there,
The journey towards Yukon and Alaska can finally begin properly. Here in Dawson Creek, where we spent the night in a Walmart parking lot, the Alaska Highway begins. The highway leads through the Yukon via Whitehorse to Delta Junction in Alaska, with a total length of over 2000 km. Of course, we also took some pictures at the famous 'Mile 0' sign :-)
And then we started, out of the city into the wilderness. At this time of year, there are hardly any cars on the highway, so we were almost always alone on the road. Endless expanses of forests and grasslands passed us by. And after a few hours of driving, we found ourselves in the middle of the snow. There was already a bit of snow in Dawson Creek, but at some point it was easily 15 cm. And all the trees were covered too. I was expecting to encounter such snowy regions, but maybe only in the Yukon or Alaska and not already in British Columbia. But oh well, I had gotten used to the snow over the winter, so it doesn't bother me that it's a bit colder and wetter.
Another highlight, or rather three highlights on the way in the north of British Columbia, were the wildlife encounters. Today we saw THREE black bears!!!! Right by the roadside, so we could take great photos. What an experience to get so close to such large animals. It was maybe only 10m between our car and the bears. But they were totally peaceful and busy looking for food. One even walked across the road in front of us. They do look a bit cute when they wobble while walking, and I would really like to touch their dense fur. It's easy to forget that they're wild predators and not always safe for humans.
Let's see what other wildlife we will see. For the night, we stayed at a recreation site in the middle of the forest, near Fort Nelson. While there was no snow in Fort Nelson, we were surrounded by 10cm of snow and it was quite cold at night.
