In the northern part of Nicaragua lies the small, sweet city of Esteli. We used it as a base and took several day trips from here.
First, we went to a waterfall again, but this time it had a beautiful large lake for swimming. Thanks to Tim, a German in our room, we learned about an old man who had been carving figures in rocks for 38 years. The elderly people who lived on the edge of the stone figures are completely dependent on the few tourists who pass through here. After seeing the impressive figures, we asked for a lunch. The old woman immediately began grinding the corn kernels with a stone and then baking them in a clay oven. We also got cheese and beans. She proudly showed us her kitchen, which was only a few months old and looked like it belonged in a Stone Age museum to us.
The next day we went to Somoto. The small town is located on the border with Honduras and is known for its beautiful gorge. Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of it, as we explored the gorge armed with life jackets.
