Longyearbyen - An polar bear has been shot on Spitsbergen. According to local authorities, the police were informed that this was to prevent an attack by the predator on a group of residents at Kongsfjord in the northwest of the Norwegian archipelago. The chief officer of Spitsbergen, known as Sysselmester Lars Fause, has initiated an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

According to reports, the polar bear was shot on Wednesday afternoon on the Blomstrand Peninsula near the small village of Ny-Ålesund. It was a four-year-old male, which was brought to the main town of Spitsbergen, Longyearbyen, for examination.
