Hurtigruten or Hurtigrut is the common term for the traditional Norwegian postal shipping line, which has been connecting places along the over 2700 kilometer long Norwegian west coast since 1893. We emphasize that these are not cruise ships of the current generation, with 2-3 thousand passengers. The founder of Hurtigruten was Captain Richard With. Today, the ships operate on a scheduled service along the coastline of Norway between Bergen and Kirkenes (directly at the Russian border) in eleven and a half days, round trip. The vessels of the shipping company Hurtigruten AS are classified as ferries that transport not only passengers but also cars and cargo. Our ship, the “MS Trollfjord,” is among them. Two to three times a year, mostly in June, July, and August, the tour is extended to Spitsbergen, which is located in the middle of the Arctic Sea, only about 1200 km from the North Pole. This was one of the reasons we chose this particular shipping company and this tour. In my next article, you will learn more about our ship, the MS Trollfjord.
