Day 15 in Crete: May 18 - Lassithi Plateau and Kritsa

Published: 03.04.2018

Today we set off on our last excursion, as tomorrow we would be returning to Germany. Unfortunately, the weather was not perfect for a trip to the Lassithi Plateau. It was quite rainy. Since we didn't have any alternative options, we still went ahead with the trip to the mountains.

Lassithi Plateau

The drive itself was scenic, but the bad weather dampened the experience. On a sunny day, the view would have been spectacular.

Our first stop was the Psychro cave, which is said to be the birthplace of Zeus. It's actually just an illuminated stalactite cave, but still interesting to see.

Afterwards, we made our way to a small, non-touristic cave. We ended up going here because we weren't sure where else to go. Unfortunately, it started raining again. We had to walk uphill to reach the cave, which wasn't really worth it. It was just a tiny hole in the rock.

We continued our tour of the plateau and came across some old windmills. From there, we had another great view. There was also a restaurant where we had a meal before continuing our journey to the mountain village of Kritsa. Although it's not part of the Lassithi Plateau, it was on our way back to Agios Nikolaos.

The mountain village of Kritsa

There wasn't much to see there, which wouldn't have been a problem if the weather was nice. It would have been a great place to sit in one of the nice little cafes or restaurants and enjoy the tranquility. However, it was pouring rain, so we quickly walked through the village and bought souvenirs. But I discovered something there, my beloved Rakomelo. It's Raki with herbs and honey. We were offered a taste, and despite being tired of Raki, I tried it and it was delicious with its sweet note. So, I bought a few bottles as gifts for friends and relatives, and for myself too :D

An eventful day comes to an end

After visiting Kritsa, the day slowly came to an end. We had a relaxing dinner in Agios Nikolaos and enjoyed the last bit of our vacation.
