Donut Island Kayaking

A warm Fijian hello - still from my hammock. I'm mostly hiding from the sun in my homestay and wandering back and forth from my hammock to the dining table. I alternate between reading, writing my blog, and watching GOT on my phone. Last night, I walked along the beach and explored the village a bit. However, there will probably be 'only' 4 posts for my entire Fiji stay - one for each island.

More about one of my kayaking adventures in New Zealand - Donut Island. A sacred island for the Maori and an island with a very unique shape, as it resembles an atoll with high walls. In the middle, there is a small beach with bright blue water and an open sky.

I gathered a few colleagues and friends, and we drove together to the beginning of the Coromandel Peninsula, rented some kayaks there, and paddled 30 minutes to the island. The sea was calm, making the trip quite enjoyable. Through a cave entrance, we then reached the interior of the island, and it is truly a special place!

The small beach is sacred, so no landing should be done here. Unfortunately, we only found that out afterward - um, oops.

We still had some strength in our arms and then decided to make a stop at a larger island on the way back. Here we were allowed to go ashore and enjoyed a pleasant beach walk.

And because I hadn't had one for a long time, and we looked around a bit in the nearby town afterward, I got - of course - a delicious Real Fruit ice cream! Yummy.

And after the little trip, we zipped back towards Hobbiton in our carpools.

And in the next post, there will be a special feature: Britta on the SAND beach. Really special since I'm not a huge fan of it, but it is what it is, and I tried once again at 'chilling on the SAND beach.'
