- This morning, the ship docks in the capital of the Dominican Republic - Santo Domingo. The city, referred to by locals as “La Capital,” is a kaleidoscope of various cultures and diverse neighborhoods. On the cobblestone streets, it's easy to forget that Santo Domingo is in the Caribbean. We take a short city tour by taxi and pass by the Presidential Palace. We see the Faro a Colon - Columbus Lighthouse. It looks like a cross between a Soviet-era apartment block and a reconstructed Maya ruin. Our next stop is Los Tres Ojos - the three eyes. These three wet caves with dark blue lagoons connected by passageways lined with stalactites offer a breathtaking view, especially if you manage to arrive before the crowds do. The statue of Christopher Columbus commemorates the discovery of the island, now known as Hispaniola. Notably, there seems to be a significant police presence and tourist security at nearly every street corner. We stroll through a few alleys and visit two churches. The Museum of Christopher Columbus is closed today. A coffee in the Zona Colonial surrounded by many, many pigeons concludes our city tour, and a taxi takes us back to the port just before the rain begins.
