Now we have arrived in Adelaide. We pick up our rental car and head towards the ferry to Kangaroo Island.

On the way, we buy a few things, as we will certainly be self-catering for two evenings, with no restaurant nearby. There will be a culinary highlight, spaghetti with canned sauce😀 Anyway, it has to be practical, and we are not here to enjoy a ** kitchen.

Everything goes smoothly, the ferry leaves the port at 6 PM and about 45 minutes later we arrive in Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. Our accommodation has the reception open until the ferry arrives, we pick up our keys and drive to our little house, where we can park the car right next to it. Just a quick dinner and then to bed, Tonga was 3 hours ahead of our time here and since we rarely went to bed sleeping on the catamaran after 9 PM, going to bed at 9 PM here is long overdue😀

The next morning we leave around 7 AM, we have 1.5 hours to our next accommodation, but we complete the journey in about 7 hours, as there is so much to see and discover! Visiting honey producers and the only commercial eucalyptus distillery in South Australia (and of course purchasing way too much), taking short hikes wherever we please. The nature here is unique! Incredibly green, with rapeseed fields as far as the eye can see (it's spring in Australia), the plants are very diverse. The soil is red, the roads are often long and straight, creating a wonderful contrast to the blue sky that is (still) with us today.

The temperatures are pleasant when the sun shines, but as soon as it sets, it gets quite cool and we are glad we brought enough warm clothing.

Our trip was 1000% tailored to the best time for humpback whales in Tonga, and while there would definitely be better times for the journey we are currently undertaking in Australia, we are enjoying being almost alone everywhere and seeing many young animals.

Only one more stop separates us from our next overnight stay, a visit to the sea lions! Here too, instead of being in groups of 20 people, there are only four of us, and we can observe the sea lions playing, sleeping, and nursing their pups. Seeing sea lions is always a highlight and leaves me with a big smile on my face. How nice it is to experience them here too!

Now we continue to our park where we have booked a little house for the next 2 nights, and we are lucky to see our first koala right at the beginning! And as we walked a bit in the park (the animals are wild, there are no fences), we could hardly believe our eyes. A koala on the ground, walking AND with a baby on its back! And only about 2 meters in front of us. It was a wonderful experience, we could hardly tear ourselves away from this sight!

Directly behind our hut, kangaroos were grazing, and grey geese with yellow beaks mingled among them. What a feeling it is to sit on the terrace and watch these animals just a few meters away! It doesn't even matter that we had to eat spaghetti from a can😀
