Day 8 – No Sunrise, a Reunion, and the Sun King 👑
The day started once again very early: I was awake by 5:45 AM. The constant time changes are really messing with my rhythm. 😂 After my morning deck walk, there was the

I was already awake at 6:00 AM – even before my alarm, which was actually set for 6:15 AM. The reason: the AIDAsol would soon dock in Mindelo! We were supposed to moor in Cape Verde at 7:00 AM, but we only had a relatively short docking time until 4:00 PM. Of course, I didn't want to waste any time.
Unfortunately, today’s sunrise was again not very kind. The sky was hazy, and clouds were forecast for the entire day. However, it was expected to be warm with temperatures reaching up to 31 degrees.
At 6:50 AM, I first went to get my early bird coffee. But horror of horrors: the coffee was empty! 😱 Fortunately, they immediately replenished it. Of course, I could have just gone into an already opened restaurant. But that would contradict my morning ritual. And certain traditions must be maintained! 😂
At 7:05 AM, the captain released the ship. I had a breakfast date with Verena at the East Restaurant at 7:15 AM. She arrived right on time, and after a boost of energy, we headed ashore together at 8:00 AM.
Welcome to Cape Verde! 🌴
Upon leaving the ship, we were greeted with a Cape Verdean dance. A lovely welcome that made us eager to explore the island.
First, I tackled one of my most important vacation tasks: I had to find the obligatory magnets! Souvenir secured, world travel collection expanded. 😎
After that, we explored Mindelo on foot. Our path took us through various neighborhoods, past markets, government buildings, and parks. I found it particularly fascinating how different the neighborhoods were. Within just a few minutes of walking, the atmosphere changed completely: from the rather impoverished harbor area to a European-influenced upscale neighborhood.
The contrast reminded me a bit of Hamburg: from St. Georg to Blankenese – only right in the middle of Cape Verde.
A special highlight was the ascent to Fortim d’el Rei. From up there, we enjoyed a fantastic view of the harbor and Mindelo. It's precisely moments like these that make it worth exploring the city on foot and climbing a few meters.
Then we went on to the beach with its turquoise water. A dreamy sight! However, the wind had its own idea of a relaxed beach visit: the sand was whipped against our legs quite vigorously. So, it turned into a free sandblasting treatment right away. 😂
Still, it was an overall successful shore excursion. I particularly liked Mindelo for its contrasts – different neighborhoods, vibrant streets, and always beautiful views of the sea.
Back on board – and first, take a breather
After our exploration, I first freed myself from the sand on board before returning to the East Restaurant at 12:45 PM as planned.
After the extensive walk through Mindelo and the subsequent meal, it was time for some eye care. My legs had truly earned the break!
At 3:00 PM, a pool activity with iced coffee and iced chocolate was tempting. With these temperatures, it was just the right thing to let the afternoon wind down relaxed.
Farewell to Mindelo – five sea days ahead 🚢
At 4:00 PM, it was already time: cast off! Mindelo was behind us, and ahead lay a longer leg across the Atlantic. A full five sea days were ahead until we reach land again. The distance: about 2,164 nautical miles or 4,008 kilometers.
At 4:30 PM, I retreated to the cabin first and watched a bit of football: HSV against Frankfurt. Even on a world trip, a little feeling of home is a must.
At 5:30 PM, I went to dinner with Sabrina and Verena. And of course, the next photo shoot was a must – this time under the motto “Streetlight.”
A sparkling wine buffet and festival atmosphere 🎶
At 7:30 PM, prime time was on the agenda. The guest with the entertainment manager was the edutainer Dorina Klawitter, who offers painting workshops. Her message: Everyone can paint! (I definitely cannot 😂). Perhaps a nice opportunity to get creative myself? 🤔
At 8:15 PM, a lovely gesture from the new hotel director followed: He opened a sparkling wine buffet for all guests. A nice gesture that certainly brings joy on board!
After that, the musical program continued. At 8:30 PM, the band “Live Beats” performed with percussion and saxophone. Normally, I don't immediately whip out the camera at such events. But when the musicians performed right in front of me, I just couldn't resist. The result: a few beautiful pictures and a truly successful show with two encores!
Musically, it was undoubtedly strong. However, after this evening, it's clear to me: A festival cruise would definitely not be for me. The atmosphere was just too chaotic for me in the long run. I enjoy the entertainment on board, but I don’t need festival vibes every night. 😉
At 10:20 PM, I finally returned to my cabin. The extensive walk through Mindelo and the evening's musical program had worn me out considerably.
And just when the day wasn't long enough, the clocks were set back an hour again at night. It’s really time to get done with all these time changes! 😂
Conclusion: A successful first shore leave in Africa 🌍
Mindelo was a beautiful start to our time in Cape Verde: a warm welcome, exciting contrasts between the city districts, a great view from Fortim d’el Rei, and turquoise water at the beach.
Now it’s time to enjoy five sea days, recharge, and let the Atlantic work its magic on us. The world journey continues – and I’m curious about what awaits us after this long crossing!
