About the KariKari beach to Whangarei

Published: 28.06.2025

So the plan was actually beach hopping today. Well, I woke up right by the sea at sunrise. I then made some phone calls and cooked. I accidentally made pesto pasta for an entire large family, no idea when I’m going to eat all of that. I actually wanted to leave now, but somehow it was so beautiful here, the sun was shining right at the sea that I just stayed here.

Then I went for a jog, yes I was surprised myself. But this endless beach, with no one around, somehow called to me. I was half dead by the end but it was still nice. I spent the rest of the day lounging in a camping chair and had a wonderful day, and I’ll head out tomorrow.

After having another amazing sunrise, I set out in the morning after a round of pesto pasta.

First, I went to a little lookout with a great view over the beaches. Then it was off to Maitai Beach, again a long stretch of gravel road but only a few potholes, so it wasn’t too bad. There was a campsite there, but I was still the only person at this perfect beach. You could see the beach in a perfect semicircle, you know what I mean? A perfect little cove. At the back, there was a swing, and my inner child was super happy and I swung there for a bit with an amazing view. Then I headed to my beach (let's just ignore that it’s spelled with a k okay) Karikari Beach. It was also great, a mega long, seemingly endless beach. The best part was that there were these barbie shells, like shells that were totally pink and purple, like from a Barbie movie haha at least that’s the vibe I got. But I didn't take a single one, I’m pretty proud. After all those beautiful beaches, things got a bit organizational. First, I went to Kerikeri to Spark, my cell phone contract thingy, you know the deal. I had written to them some time ago about the cancellation. Sadly no response yet, and being the helpless person I am when it comes to calling, I drove to a store. No idea why, but it seems like calling is worse in my mind than being there in person. Yes, it was great; they were super nice, and it’s now officially ended on my desired date. Since my next stops are near Auckland close to Whangarei (where we’ve been before and where I felt very comfortable), I thought let’s head back there. I had to buy a suitcase anyway :) I then gathered the courage and called the flight thing because I need to add 1 extra luggage. You know, I jumped over my own shadow and nope, they can’t do that, I have to do it in person (where it then becomes super expensive). Well, nothing can be done about that, it stresses me out a bit right now but I hope everything works out. I then drove to the campsite where I was previously and walked to the city. It was again very nice, and well, not exactly like coming home but similar, I usually don’t go to one place multiple times, so having something familiar is a really beautiful feeling, I must say. So I went to my regular café (I never actually go to cafés and I was only here once lol) for a brownie and a chai and then sat on a bench by the river to read. What can I say? I felt like I was living there, didn’t need a GPS or anything, it was a dream. Tonight I’ll be calling and reading and then I’ll be on my way again tomorrow :)
